The Ultimate Guide to Internet Safety Second Edition

Internet Safety Young Readers' Guide

Remember always to maintain the most current version of an anti-virus software program for your system and install the most recent security patches for your operating system and programs. The following list of known script infectors should be used as an aid to recognize possible infection. To reduce your chances of infection, always install, update and use your anti-virus software. If you use a home personal computer with a Microsoft Windowstm operating system, chances are that you do not need the Windows Scripting Host installed. You may find directions to uninstall here.

One way to receive a script virus is by visiting an infected webpage. You can arrive there by clicking on a locator in an email that directs you to an infected page or by making a typing error while typing in a locator into your browser and the wrong intended webpage displayed has a virus. If you recognize the infectious download, disconnect from the internet immediately.

Another way to receive a script virus is to be at an Internet Relay Client chatroom where there is an infected user. Your settings should tell your IRC program to ask you before accepting or downloading any files. If you do not know the person, do not accept the file. They may or may not know they are infected and spreading the infectious worm or trojan. Sometimes the infection can disable your security settings and automatically infect.
