Reporting Internet Problems

When you encounter a situation online that you suspect may be illegal or that makes you uncomfortable, look at the list here and find the appropriate link to the agency for your situation. If you receive ANY type of threat to your physical well-being, contact your local police immediately. If they are unable to provide you with a response that is satisfactory to you, contact your state Attorneys General office from here or your state/local computer crime unit. A list can be found here.

Contact a computer law attorney when someone has stolen or is assuming your online identity, harassing you online, violating copyright, or any situation where your "evidence" is at a website or on a server that you do not manage or control. The reason is that any owner/company of a server in the USA needs a court order or subpoena to allow your or your attorney to have your appropriate records/transactions. Your attorney will know how to properly file the necessary requests. Do not request this information yourself. A list of computer law attorneys can be found here.

If you are unsure which agency to find help with, you may write to Cyber Criminals Most Wanted and you will be directed to the appropriate agency.

And, remember the basic rules of internet safety that considerably reduce your chances of an online problem. Refer to the Safety Guide for a quick review. Make this a family or office practice. Constant repetition will make this chore into an everyday practice.
