Storing & Moving Computers & Peripherals

When you are preparing to relocate or move to a new home or office, remember some common sense preparations for the transport of your computers and peripherals.

Don't unplug any computer, any peripherals, CD or DVD players with media in a drive. Keep all media in their covers when not in use.

Unplug your computers and peripherals a day before packing them. This allows the internal parts to cool down to room temperature. Too much heat with nowhere to go can damage the internal parts of your computers and peripherals. Always avoid extreme temperatures with your computers such as freezing temperatures or an abundance of humidity.

When packing, try to use the original box they arrived in. If it is not available, use a sturdy corrugated box capable of handling the weight. Be sure that all parts are surrounded by styrofoam or bubble wrap, and do not jiggle or are not packed together too tightly.

When your computers and peripherals are at their new location, allow them to adjust to the new room temperature for a day or so before plugging in to the electricity.

Remember that your computer and the internet are tools to be used to accomplish tasks. The tasks can be talking with family or friends, shopping, doing business, or doing homework. Use them properly and safely. Refer to the Safety Guide for a quick review. Keeping yourself and your family safe online and in the everyday world helps keep your neighborhood, state and country safe.
